The dense ISM, and star formation in galaxies, a stage in the dark revealed.

I will describe recent observational and theoretical advances regarding the dense H2 gas phase in galaxies at the stage where the initial conditions of star formation are set. Spectacular findings reveal it also as the stage of powerful AGN feedback onto the ISM. A brief update of a Herschel Legacy project exploring these isues will be given, as well as an update on the comissioning status of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile.
